Most articles with this title open with a rainfall chart. This one cannot, because we have no sourced Ethiopian climate data in front of us and we are not going to write a season table from memory. What we do have is better anyway, because it answers the question a reader is actually asking.
Where comes before when
Before choosing a month, check where you can actually go. Flights to Tigray have been disrupted by fighting through 2026. Addis Ababa to Mekelle flights resumed on 11 October 2026 after a suspension that began on 23 September, but flights to Aksum and Shire had not been confirmed as restored when this page was checked on 28 October 2026. The Awash valley is restricted by access, because foreign nationals cannot currently fly into the Afar region. No month changes any of that, so check access locally before planning a visit.
Two dates that do not move
Both are fixed calendar dates rather than movable feasts, which is unusual and useful. If either is the reason for the trip, the trip is planned around a known day rather than an estimate.
- Timkat, the Ethiopian epiphany, begins on the eve of 18 January. UNESCO inscribed it in 2019.
- Meskel, the commemoration of the finding of the True Holy Cross, is celebrated across Ethiopia on 26 September. UNESCO inscribed it in 2013.
Altitude is the other constant
Ethiopia is high. Addis Ababa sits above 2,300 meters, which is still below the 2,500 meter line under which the CDC records malaria transmission, and the CDC names Addis Ababa among the areas where it recommends malaria prevention.
Practically, that means warm days and genuinely cold nights year round in the highlands, thin air that shortens the first day or two whatever your fitness, and sun that burns faster than the temperature suggests. None of that is seasonal, so none of it is a reason to prefer one month over another.
What we would tell a friend
Decide the region first, and confirm access the week you book rather than the week you leave. Then pick your dates around Timkat or Meskel if a festival is what you want, and around nothing in particular if it is not.

Ethiopia Packing List
Altitude, a malaria line drawn at 2,500 meters and thin medical care outside Addis Ababa decide most of what goes in an Ethiopian bag.

The walled city of Harar and the Gedeo agroforestry landscape: two of Ethiopia's twelve World Heritage inscriptions, beyond the two everyone already knows.
