The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005 under criteria (ii), (iii) and (vi). It lies on the outskirts of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, about 250 kilometers from Lagos, and it is one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria.
Visiting
- The grove is on the edge of Osogbo and is walked.
- It is an active place of worship, not only a monument. Behave as you would at any place of worship.
- Ask before photographing people, and ask whether photography is welcome at a shrine at all.
- The annual Osun festival draws very large crowds. Take the care any large gathering calls for.
- Check current entry and health requirements with official sources before traveling.
